How can you do your bit for wildlife conservation
Wildlife conservation is extremely important for helping to keep our ecosystem balanced and our wildlife happy and healthy. On this day, we are taking a look at some of the things you can do from the comfort of your own home. It may be small everyday changes or one big change, but we can all do something to help wildlife conservation.
What can you do to help wildlife conservation in your area?
With wildlife conservation being such a broad subject, it can be overwhelming when trying to understand what you can do as an individual. However, there are plenty of things that you can do in the comfort of your own garden or around your neighbourhood, that will make a huge difference to the wildlife in your area.Creating a wildlife-friendly garden
Adding more plants, trees and shrubs that provide for your local wildlife can be a great start. Whether it’s giving birds a place to nest or hedgehogs shelter in the winter, there’s plenty you can do to transform your garden into a wildlife haven! Easy additions for your wildlife-friendly garden:- Compost bin
- Bird boxes
- Bird feeders & wild bird seed
- Clean water
Get involved in local wildlife trusts
There are plenty of regional wildlife trusts across the country that you can join and many of them will have regular activities for members. These trusts help wildlife conservation across the UK with all of their hard work and they are always looking for volunteers. Like many other charities, you can also raise money for your local wildlife trust. Take part in a fun run or give something up you love for sponsorship. You can raise money for these trusts just like you would any other charity, so it’s always good to get creative with fundraising ideas!Take part in a beach clean
Ever since Blue Planet highlighted the dramatic impact of plastic on our oceans, a spotlight has been shone on single-use plastic and how we can improve this crisis situation. One of the best ways to help is not just cutting down on the amount of single-use plastic you use, but also cleaning up any you see. This could be anywhere, at the side of the road, in your local park or even a city centre. One of the most popular ways though is by doing a beach clean. Our beaches are littered with plastic packaging and bottles, so group beach cleans have begun to pop up all around our coastline. These help us to clean up our beaches, but also prevent this plastic re-entering our waters and creating further pollution and damage to sea creatures. Wildlife conservation doesn’t just have to be about flying to distant lands and looking after critically endangered species, it can be as simple as looking after the critters that visit your garden on a daily basis. Small changes will always make a big difference, so don’t be afraid to make gradual changes in order to look after your wildlife.13th Dec 2018
