Homemade Bird Food: How To Make Your Own Bird Food

Homemade Bird Food: How To Make Your Own Bird Food

Homemade bird food is a great way to give birds the much-needed nutrients throughout the year, all whilst saving some cash. This blog aims to uncover some of the best homemade bird food treats and how you can make them yourselves!

Using a variety of different bird seeds is a brilliant way to keep birds coming back to your garden, enticing them with varied tasty treats.

Homemade Bird Food: What To Include

Firstly, let us explore the best types of food to include in homemade bird food.

Fruit - whether it be dried or fresh, fruit is always a good snack, packed with energy, to add to your homemade bird food. We recommend grating or cutting into small slices if you are using fruits like apples. Birds also love a variety of berries, both fresh and dried, so these make a good option to add to any bird snack.

Be sure to soak any fruit overnight and chop it finely so it won’t swell inside the bird’s stomach.

Peanuts or peanut butter - peanuts which are unsalted and specifically fit for bird consumption are a firm favourite amongst a variety of bird species. Kibbled peanuts or organic, unsalted peanut butter are a great option to add to your homemade bird snacks.

Suet - suet balls are popular amongst wild birds and garden birds, specifically in the winter when they need extra fat content to keep them warm and safe. Suet or lard can not only offer lots of nutrients to birds but also acts as the perfect consistency for your homemade bird food, sticking ingredients together.

Seeds - how can we talk about bird food without mentioning their favourite thing - seeds! A selection of bird seeds such as sunflower hearts and Nyjer seeds make for a snack they are sure to favour. Packed full of nutrients, seeds are essential for any homemade bird food.

How To Make Your Own Bird Food

Making your own bird food is simple when you know what to include! It is recommended that with whatever bird cake you decide to make, you stick to the ratio of one part fat to two parts dry ingredients to get the best consistency for your flying garden visitors.

Here’s an example of what you could include in your homemade bird food.

  • 1/2 cup of sunflower seeds
  • 1/2 Nyjer seeds
  • 1/2 dried fruit (be sure to soak them overnight)
  • 1/2 bird peanuts
  • 1 cup of lard or suet

Once all the ingredients have been finely chopped and mixed, you can mould the ingredients into a perfect cake and put it in a feeder usually ideal for suet balls.

Be sure, whatever ingredients you decide to include in your homemade bird food, that they are good quality and fit for bird consumption.
