Despite a common misconception that birds don’t require feeding during summer when natural food sources are in abundance, birds actually need feeding all year round. Sure, in winter they are faced with a diminished amount of natural food sources and climates are colder so they need to find shelter and warmth for survival.

Food shortages can in fact occur at any time throughout the year and so it is essential that we keep up with bird feeding habits throughout the warmer months too.

During spring and summer, birds require high energy, high protein foods to successful moult, mate and nest their young.

Equally, in the winter, birds require high-fat content snacks to ensure their energy is sustained to keep them warm and aid survival in the colder months.

The correct time of day to feed birds is a hot topic of conversation among avid bird watchers. Although there isn’t a direct answer to this question other than ‘it depends’, birds are usually most active early in the morning. 

The time of year, weather and type of bird can all be depending factors on the time of day you can expect your garden to be at its busiest.

Before dawn is when you can expect the most activity from the most varied selection of bird breeds. However, birds will eat throughout the entire day and so it is necessary that food sources are replenished regularly.

When Is The Best Time To See Birds Feeding

Between the hours of 7 am and 11 am are usually the best times to watch birds. Depending on the season, you can expect to see birds earlier in spring and summer when mornings are lighter, and later in the winter months.
