Groundbait is one of the most important tools in coarse and match fishing — it’s used to attract fish into your swim, keep them feeding, and hold them long enough for you to catch. It doesn’t usually act as a hookbait itself, but as a way to create activity and confidence around your hookbait. ? What is Groundbait? A mix of dry ingredients (breadcrumbs, fishmeal, seeds, crushed particles, etc.) that you prepare with water. Once dampened, it can be balled up and thrown by hand, fed via feeder, cupped in (pole fishing), or spombed out. Designed to break down in water, releasing scent, colour, and particles to attract species like carp, bream, tench, roach, and hybrids. ? Types of Groundbait Breadcrumb-based mixes – light, fluffy, and good for silver fish like roach. Fishmeal-based mixes – high protein, strong smell, perfect for carp, F1s, and bream. Sweet mixes – often include crushed hemp, molasses, or sweet additives, attractive for tench and bream. Method mixes – sticky groundbait designed for use on method feeders, often combined with pellets. ⚖️ How to Prepare Groundbait Mix dry: Pour groundbait into a bucket. Add water slowly: Mix while adding a little water at a time. Riddle (sieve) the mix: This removes lumps and aerates the bait. Rest for 10 minutes: Let the particles soak up the moisture. Adjust texture: Add more water if you want it heavier/stickier, or leave it drier for a quicker breakdown. ✅ When & How to Use Balling in: Throw balls of groundbait to kick-start your swim (often at the start of a session). Little and often: Top up small amounts to keep fish interested without overfeeding. In a feeder: Pack into cage or method feeders for precision. Pole fishing: Cup in groundbait at regular intervals for accuracy. ? Tips for Success Add live bait (maggots, pinkies, chopped worm) or particles (corn, hemp, casters) for extra attraction. Match your groundbait colour to the lakebed (darker for clear waters, lighter for coloured waters). Don’t overfeed — it’s meant to draw fish, not fill them up!
