The small black seeds mimic tiny water insects, which carp, roach, and tench naturally feed on.
It keeps fish grubbing around in the swim for ages.
? Preparation (Essential!)
Raw hemp is too hard and can be harmful to fish, so you must soak and cook it:
Soak: Cover hemp seeds with water and soak for 24 hours.
Boil: Bring to a boil and simmer for 20–30 minutes until the seeds split and show a small white shoot (this is the “tail”).
Optional: Add salt, sugar, or flavours (like chilli, garlic, or molasses) while cooking to boost attraction.
Cool & store: Keep in the cooking water so the natural oils stay with the bait.
? How to Use Large Hemp Bait
Loose feed: Catapult, spod, or bait dropper small handfuls to draw fish in.
Hook bait:
Hemp is small, so anglers often fish a grain or two of maize, tares, or artificial corn over a bed of hemp.
Some advanced rigs use hemp on a hair rig with a baiting needle.
Mixes: Combine hemp with maple peas, tiger nuts, or maize for a rich particle mix that holds carp in the swim.
