Fishing with tares is a classic and very effective method, especially for targeting species like roach, dace, and chub. Tares are essentially maple peas that have been prepared (usually soaked and boiled) until they’re just soft enough for a fish to take, but still firm enough to stay on the hook. Here’s a quick guide to fishing with tares: Preparing Tares Soak them in water overnight (about 12–24 hours). Boil them gently for 30–40 minutes until they soften. You want them to be just tender, not mushy. Some anglers add a little sugar or even food dye (like black or red) to make them more attractive. Once cooked, keep them in their water or store them in the fridge. When to Use Them Best in summer and autumn when natural seeds and berries are available in rivers. Especially effective when roach are wary of maggots or casters. How to Fish with Tares Hooking: Use a fine-wire hook, usually size 16–20, depending on fish size. Hook the tare through the skin so it sits neatly. Feeding: Loose feed hempseed little and often — roach and dace love hemp, and tares mimic hemp but are easier to present on a hook. Tackle: A light float setup with small hooks and fine line works best. The idea is to trot or present the bait naturally. Why They Work Roach in particular get preoccupied on hemp, and tares are the perfect hook-bait imitation. Once they’re confidently feeding, bites can be fast and furious.
