What Are the Best Ways to Store Bird Feed?
Storing bird feed properly will give you peace of mind that you are doing the best you can to keep your garden visitors happy. It will also help you stay organised when placing out different bird seeds for your various bird feeders. Here are some of the best tips when it comes to storing feed. Bird Feeder
  1. Fresh Bird Seed

Start off with a fresh bag of bird feed. If possible, on arrival or in the shop try and examine the seed to see if there are any signs of mould, damage, etc. Seed often comes directly from the manufacturer, but can be subject to deterioration if a shop, for instance, does not store the bird seed properly.
  2. The Perfect Container

Seed needs to be kept in clean and dry containers. How much seed you purchase will determine the size of the container. Basic Tupperware, or other plastic containers with lids are an ideal solution. If you are planning on buying significant amounts of seed, it is best to have a large container ready. You could even clean out an old plastic bin and use that to store feed.
  3. Store bird feed in the Correct Place

As well as a cool, dry container, you also need to store it in a cool and dry place. This is essential to preserve freshness. Store the feed in cooler areas of the house. You should also only store your feed outside if the weather is cooler and if it is in a location where animals can’t reach it. Place bird seed containers in locations that you can easily access. With proper storage, you will save money and protect your investment as you will not have to dispose of seed which has turned rotten.
  4. Checking for Bad Seed

The easiest way to spot your birdseed is bad is when you notice birds are no longer eating it. While birds will naturally favour food such as fruits, mealworms and seeds, there will always be birds visiting your feeder as part of their daily routine. If they stop eating the seed, then you know it’s bad.
  5. Keep your feeders full

Check your bird feeders regularly to make sure it remains fresh. It is also important to keep feeders filled with fresh seed if you want to maximise the amount of your favourite feathered friends visiting your garden. Birds such as finches will not visit gardens with seeds that have turned rotten. If you spot any mould or infested seed, get rid ASAP! Try and replenish your bird feeder with a variety of different fresh foods, as well as regularly cleaning it. Visit our article on how to keep birds healthy all year round here.
  6. How long will it last?

If you follow these tips and your bird seed is properly stored, it can last well over a year and still taste delicious. Rotate your stock to ensure you keep using the oldest stock first, and keep a good quantity to satisfy the needs of your birds, especially with winter coming
