Tocopherol-rich extracts from sources, also known as vitamin E, are used as antioxidants approved by the EC. Salters Maintenance does not contain any colours, antioxidants or preservatives. The natural colour of the food is maintained after cooking by using an antioxidant derived from vitamin E and tocopherol extracts obtained naturally.

The main ingredient in this 15kg dog food is chicken, except for the variant intentionally formulated with reduced protein levels. In compliance with Trading Standards, the ingredients are listed by their highest percentage in the product. Despite this, "Chicken" is listed three times: Chicken Meat Meal, Chicken, and Chicken Fat, collectively comprising the highest percentage of ingredients in dog food. The exception is Salters Senior, which contains less chicken to achieve lower protein levels.
