The importance of feeding birds all year round
Many people ensure their garden birds are getting plenty of fresh food during the chillier months of autumn and winter when natural food sources such as berries, seeds and insects are scarce. However, wild birds need a nutritionally balanced diet all year round to maintain good health. There is the breeding and nesting season which takes it’s toll on mating pairs who need to keep their energy levels up to care for their young. Youngsters also need extra calories for fledging. It can take a few weeks for a young fledgling to find its wings and provide for itself. Both young and older birds alike benefit from extra calories during the summer months. All birds are of course, attracted to feeding stations placed near bird baths where they can cool off in the heat of long summer days so be sure to place your feeders near a fresh, clean water source. By September, many summer visitors will be preparing to migrate to warmer climes. Every last bit of energy will be spent on these epic journeys to their winter haunts. Although common summer visitors such as Swifts, Swallows and House Martins almost never venture near bird feeders they have been known to sweep across larger more open stretches of lawn when left to grow slightly longer as longer grass encourages more insects for these birds to feed on.Product Reviews
